Management consulting sector is a healthy choice for UK graduates

 Work prospects are
looking good for UK
graduates interested in
a career in management
consulting, according to
the annual Target
Graduate Trends Survey
released by graduate
careers publisher GTI.
   Increases have been
noted both in the
average number of
vacancies per firm and
in the number of
employers offering work
experience placements in
the UK. Graduates can
also look forward to an
average starting salary
of £30,000 and a
generous benefits
package, with nearly two
thirds of employers

 significant annual
snapshot of major
employers’ views, with
around 4,380 of the UK’s
graduate recruiters
taking part.
   Among the main
findings of the survey
is the fact that the
average number of
vacancies per
organisation has risen
to 68 from last year’s
65 vacancies.
   Further good news for
students is the rise in
the proportion of
employers offering work
experience placements,
from 62% to 78%.
   However, graduates
face stiff competition
to win jobs, with

 roughly 15 applications
to every vacancy
offered.
   Graduates can expect
a generous pay packet,
with the average salary
starting at £30,000.
Benefits are about the
same as last year, with
the exception of a
considerable rise in
golden hellos – up to
59% of employers are
offering one this year.
   Chris Phillips, GTI’s
UK and Ireland
publishing director,
said: “This year,
employers in many
sectors have reduced the
number of work
experience placements
available to students.

 I’m glad to say that
management consultants
have bucked the trend
and clearly see the
benefits of investing in
internships to grow the
pool of knowledgeable
and committed
applicants.”
   Thirty-six recruiters
in the management
consulting sector
completed forms this
year to provide the data
to complete the survey.
They were asked to
estimate their current
and future vacancies,
the number of
applications received
and the starting salary
for graduates.

over the last seven
years from eight titles
