City high fliers hit the ground in £25,000 fundraiser for malaria

 £25,000 has been raised
in a six hour abseilling
challenge to raise funds
to fight malaria,
involving 50 employees,
including several board
members, at London-based
professional services
firm
PricewaterhouseCoopers
LLP.

   The descent of the
iconic London office at
Embankment Place,
opposite the London Eye
and on top of Charing
Cross station, was
approx 39 meters (130
feet), the equivalent of
jumping from four
average two storey
houses, with many taking
part in abseiling for

 the very first time.

   The event is part of
the firm’s long running
support of the Against
Malaria Foundation, and
the money raised will
purchase over 8000 anti
malaria bed nets in
Africa. Over the last
four years, in addition
to providing pro-bono
accountancy services,
PwC employees have
raised over £250,000 for
the charity, purchasing
almost 100,000 anti –
malaria bed nets, and
protecting up to 160,000
children and their
families.

   About 3.3 billion
people - half of the

 world's population - are
at risk of malaria.
Every year, this leads
to about 250 million
malaria cases and nearly
one million deaths. In
Africa alone, 20% or one
in every five childhood
deaths is due to the
effects of the disease
and it is estimated that
every 30 seconds a child
dies from Malaria in the
country. Long-lasting
insecticidal bed nets
are used to provide
protection to people at
risk in high
transmission areas
especially young
children and pregnant
women.
