2005 Recruitment Channel Survey ---
Top-Consultant well ahead in applicant mind share amongst job sites

 Niche focus is paying
dividends in the job
site business. For the
fourth year running,
Top-Consultant.com has
topped the list of sites
most regularly reviewed
by consultancy job
applicants. Its strategy
of mixing content and
jobs to attract the most
visitors seems to be
paying off. It had over
2 million visits to its
UK site in the last year
alone. A large
proportion of this
traffic was free, a key
consideration in the
wafer thin margin
business of internet job
sites. Top-Consultant's
approach has always been
to attract niche traffic
through a mixture of
news, thought leadership
and jobs. This strategy
effectively replicates a
focussed trade journal
on line - without
replicating the heavy
distribution costs.

 With 75% mind share
their position looks
unassailable.
   Monster came
second, the position it
has held for the last
four years. It is now
the clear leader in the
generalist job site
world. Its strategy is
to build up large global
advertiser accounts -
offering them a truly
global solution. This
approach has clearly
worked in management
consulting where many of
the advertisers are
large American led
companies with global
office networks.
Monster is number two
and achieves more than
the twice the level of
attention from internet
job seekers as its
generalist rival
Totaljobs. Monster has
recently been making a
series of acquisitions,
particularly in Europe,
aimed at strengthening

 its position still
further.
   The high share of
the top two boards shows
that job boards are
starting to behave like
classical consumer
goods, where the
consumer will only
engage with a few
brands. In the consumer
goods industry this
creates a significant
penalty for being a
second tier brand and
results in these brands
being bought by or
buying first tier brands
to get market access.
If the same is true for
job boards expect
further consolidation in
the future.
   One interesting new
entrant in the table is
Exec Appointments who
have been strengthening
their position rapidly
in the last year.
