TCS wins $100m deal with Phones 4u

 Tata Consultancy Services
has signed a $100m
agreement to provide a
full range of managed IT
services to 4uGroup, the
holding company behind
Phones 4u and other
organisations in the UK
telecommunication and
financial services
marketplaces.

   Under the agreement,
TCS will provide a full
range of IT and business
change services to 4u
Group including: service
management; application
support, maintenance,
management and
development; data centre
and desktop services;

 helpdesk; networks and
communications; business
support; and management
of all third party
contracts for the
organisation's retail
operations. This will
enable the group to
improve IT service,
increase capacity, boost
skills, create a more
flexible IT model and
ultimately enhance the
business to meet current
and future demands.

   "This relationship
with TCS is part of our
ongoing commitment to
further enhance our
business, deliver on our
strategy and meet the

 significant contract win
underlines the important
role that TCS plays in
enabling UK businesses to
enhance their
competitiveness and
retain market share,
especially in the current
economic environment. It
is testimony to our
commitment to the UK
market and to our ability
to deliver the highest
level of service to our
customers."

   TCS has around 4,800
people working in 65
locations in the UK. As
the company's operations
continue to grow, TCS has
numerous opportunities in

the UK alone at any one
time.

   "This contract
demonstrates that while
there is undoubtedly
unrest in global markets,
there is still interest
and investment going into
outsourcing contracts,"
said Ian Brown, senior
analyst at Ovum. "However
to close the deal,
vendors need to show how
they bring value to the
table, in terms of high
quality delivery,
extensive skills and
competitive pricing."

customers," said Darren
Billings, chief
technology officer at 4u
Group. "TCS, with its
strong track record of
delivery and its
unparalleled heritage
within the Tata Group,
was the partner of choice
to help us meet these
goals."

The UK is neglecting its leadership pipeline

 A survey of 1,200 people
by international
leadership development
organisation Common
Purpose has found that
less than half of people
receive leadership
development before the
age of 25. This is
despite the fact that
over half of respondents
said they had wanted

 leadership development at
a younger age.

   The significance of
this disparity is
underlined by the finding
that 60% of respondents
had already held
leadership positions by
the time they reached 25.
The survey found that the
majority of these

 leadership positions were
in employment. This
suggests that there are
many young people taking
the lead in the UK’s
workplaces who feel that
they are not getting the
leadership development
they need. It seems the
UK is neglecting its
leadership pipeline by
failing to prepare its

 young leaders to become
the senior leaders of
tomorrow.

   Julia Middleton, chief
executive of Common
Purpose, said: “We have
to redress this imbalance
because organisations and
society need more young
people prepared and able
to stand up as leaders.

   “You have to learn to
lead young because it’s a
bumpy ride, you
inevitably get it right
and wrong for a long
time, and you have to be
able to bounce back,
forgive yourself and keep
going.”
