Insights from the Consultancy Careers Fair suggest sector is still growing apace

 The credit wobble of
recent months may have
given us reason to fear
for the health of the
economy, but whilst this
has hit the financial
sector pretty hard it
has so far had little
impact on the consulting
sector. This is the key
conclusion to emerge
from our whistlestop
tour of consulting firms
exhibiting at the
Consultancy Careers Fair
on 12th October – and
the feedback received
since.
   “The major brand
names are continuing to
recruit significant
numbers of new staff and
are reporting heady
hiring targets for 2008,
in spite of recent
concerns about a credit
crunch,” commented
Top-Consultant director
Tony Restell.
   “A few with heavy
exposure to the
financial sector are
monitoring the situation
closely – and strategy
practices that have been
doing a lot of work with
private equity clients
have clearly suffered a
slowdown in project
wins; but for the
majority of firms it’s
very much business as
usual – and the clamour
to attract new hires is
showing no signs of
diminishing outside of
the FS practice areas,”
he added.
   Ten leading
consulting brands gave
presentations at the
Consultancy Careers Fair
on 12th October that

    The Lausanne
Consulting Group
participated again this
year and commented: “We
had hundreds of visits
to our stand, including
not only candidates who
came to pre-arranged
personal interviews with
us, but also candidates
who discovered us at the
event.” The spokesman
added: “As a result of
the event we have
selected excellent
candidates to be part of
our recruitment
processes and have
created alliances with
business schools.”
   Nimisha Overton,
marketing manager at
Selecture, commented:
“The publicity for this
event was excellent – we
found ourselves talking
to people who had
travelled from Europe
specifically to attend.
There was a great mix of
individuals, ranging
from newly qualified
students right up to
director level, with
varying skills that
could be transferred to
a very prosperous role
in consultancy.”
   Selecture also
observed that its
attendance at the
Careers Fair was
complemented by its
ongoing presence on the
Top-Consultant site:
“Due to our job
advertising on
Top-Consultant, it
seemed that everybody
that we spoke to was
aware of our brand and
wanted to come and find
out what we had to
offer. We obtained some

 excellent CVs that have
been put forward for
interviews and also put
faces to the names of
some of our clients.”
   Attendees at this
year’s fair had the
chance to meet three of
the “Big Four”
accountancy firms –
Deloitte, Ernst & Young
and KPMG; many of the
world’s leading
consulting brands such
as Accenture, Atos
Consulting, BT and IBM;
plus a diverse range of
exciting niche firms
like Capco, Curzon,
Detica, expw: consulting
and Troika.
   The organisations
were represented by 500+
members of staff,
comprising a mixture of
HR and practising
consultants, giving
candidates a wide range
of people to talk to at
each of the exhibiting
stands.

   Positive
feedback

   Exhibitor feedback
also suggests that a
significant number of
hires will result from
the fair. The
overwhelming feeling was
that the quality of
candidates far surpassed
that seen at the 2006
event. The impressive
number of hires made in
2006 should
correspondingly increase
this year, though it’s
too early to tell who
will gain most from
exhibiting at the fair.
