Capco team tackles Kilimanjaro to raise money for charity

 Employees of Capco, the
global business and
technology consultancy
dedicated solely to the
financial services
industry, have climbed
Africa’s tallest
mountain to raise money
for leading
international
development charity VSO.

   The 12 staff members
from five different
countries, including the
UK’s Ian Holden and Orla
Martin, made the trip
from 16 to 27 January
2011.

   Before beginning
their ascent, the trek
team spent a day at a
VSO-supported project in
Nairobi. The
organisation visited,
The Autism Society of
Kenya, works to support
and empower people
living with autism in
Kenya.

   Following this
inspirational
experience, the team
began their seven-day
journey which saw them
venturing through five
different ecosystems,
dealing with the effects
of altitude and sleeping
in freezing temperatures
before they reached
Kilimanjaro’s peak.

   Capco’s Martin said:
“Climbing Kilimanjaro
with my colleagues from
across Europe was one of
the best experiences of
my life. It was one of
the most gruelling
challenges I have ever
undertaken but reaching
Uhuru Point on Monday 25
January at 8.30am
brought with it a
wonderful sense of
achievement, made all
the more meaningful by
the fact that we raised
almost £40,000 for VSO.

   “To have undertaken
this challenge with such
a great group of people
reminds me how fortunate
we are at Capco that we
can take a group of
strangers from offices
all over Europe, put
them together on a
mountain for one week
and what results is the
formation of firm
friendships and
pan-European
collaboration on
everything from IP to
ski trips!

   “I feel very
fortunate to have been
in a position to support
VSO and the wonderful
work they do in
international
development by

 undertaking one of the
toughest challenges of
my life.VSO is such a
worthwhile charity and
the climb was a great
way to raise money for
this cause. While we
were in Africa we had
the opportunity to visit
one of their local
projects and had the
chance to see first-hand
the fantastic work they
are doing.”

   Capco has currently
raised close to £40,000
for VSO. These funds
will help VSO continue
its work in 44 of the
world’s poorest
countries, where its
volunteers are working
to make a lasting
contribution in the
fight against poverty.

   The Capco Kilimanjaro
Challenge 2011 is just
one of a number of
community activities
that Capco staff take
part in. Employees are
encouraged to get
involved – through
charity runs, recycling
initiatives, donation of
used computers and
clothing to good causes
and carbon offsetting
schemes, among others.
